    is a tribute to the musical contributions of Cuban composer Guido López-Gavilán, considered a national treasure in his native Cuba. Gavilán’s music is a delightful integration of Afro-Cuban ritual music, fokloric dances and European traditions. The Project partners with PatchWorks Films to offer a documentary on the Gavilán Family as a companion piece to the concert.

     Mujeres en Música/Women in Music:

    un diálogo cultural entre Estados Unidos y España

    Women in Music/Mujeres en Música aims to promote new works by women composers from United States and Spain; to create an arena that promotes female creators of all ages, race and creeds, as well as aid in aculturating new audiences for these works both in United States and Spain. This years concert exposes music composed by members of two gender specific associations in Spain and New York City respectively.

    This year’s concert is being done in collaboration with the International Institute in Madrid (Spain).  The concert will be performed by American mezzo soprano and 2007-2008 Fulbright to Spain Anna Tonna; Brazilian soprano Angelica de la Riva; Spanish classical pianist Isabel Pérez Dobarro, and guest artist violinist 2008-2009 Fulbright Scholar to Spain, Mili Fernández.

    The concert will be comprised of works for solo piano, voice and piano (in English and in Spanish), piano and violin, and any combination of these, submitted by members of Asociación de Mujeres en la Música (Spain), New York Women Composers, Inc., and Very Young Composers Program from the New York Philharmonic. Composers include Debra Kaye, Anne Phillips, Kale Pierson, Pamela Sklar , Amparo Fabra and Jing Zhou from the New York Women Composers, Inc., and Julia María Dopico, Sonia Megías and Reyes Oteo from Asociación de Mujeres en la Música.  

    In addition, the program of the concert will pay homage to pioneer women composers of the early 20th century from United States and Spain: Amy Beach (1867-1944), Eugenia Osterberger (1852-1932) and María Rodrigo (1888-1967).

    Women in Music/Mujeres en Música are winners of the 2018 Seed Money Grant, awarded by the New York Women Composers, Inc.
